Boosting Innovation for the Development of Smart-Service Factories of the Future: The Cases of the Federal State of Vorarlberg and its Neighbouring Regions
Factory of the Future is an initiative of the European Commission. It is highly narrative and describes the transformation of âordinaryâ manufacturing operations and structures to fully-integrated cyber-physical manufacturing systems. Basing on case study research performed in the greater area of Vorarlberg, this article aims to explore how Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the field of manufacturing can evolve to smart-service Factories of the Future. It takes a mixed-methods approach with quantitative research (questionnaire) and qualitative case study interviews and provides findings about three main topics in service system engineering: âtransformation of an operational need into a description of system performance parametersâ, âintegration of related technical parameters and assurance of compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfacesâ and âintegration of reliability, maintainability, safety, survivability, human and other such factorsâ. As it turns out, increased servitization measures, service management, service performance and service quality by development of service-oriented architectures (SOA) are key to evolve to a smart-service Factory of the Future
WHAT IS SMART ABOUT SERVICES? BREAKING THE BOND BETWEEN THE SMART PRODUCT AND THE SERVICE
While the conceptual delineation between conventional and smart products is rather conspicuous, the distinction between conventional services and their smart counterparts remains elusive. This study develops a conceptual framework for understanding the distinctive attributes of smart services and their relationship to smart products. In a systematic literature review of publications from top information systems outlets, 30 contributions holding relevant information on smart services are identified and subjected to content analysis. The analysis reveals a variety of different definitions and characterizations of smart services and relations to concepts like data-driven services and services associated to smart products and smart objects. These findings are used to examine artifacts developed in rather design-oriented papers to derive five dimensions that impact the level of smartness of services: richness of the data, the knowledge intensiveness of the engine for decision support, the level of sophistication of the outcome delivered to the service user(s), the architecture of the stakeholders, and the automation level of the service processes. Within this scope, the product can have four roles: sensor, computer, interface, or integrator. The paper concludes by identifying some gaps in the overall research landscape and provides directions for future research
Teaching Data Driven Innovation â Facing a Challenge for Higher Education
In the era of digitization, data has become a very important resource for competition. To generate value from these constantly growing amounts of data and to create innovative services and business models based on the data, organizations need to rely on well-trained data scientists and analysts. The required skill set for such experts is complex and challenges higher education in the information systems discipline. Despite some first and promising efforts, there is still a lack of novel teaching approaches for data driven innovation. In this paper we design a morphological box providing a solution space for teaching data driven innovation at universities. For the systematization we analyze the submissions of an academic analytics contest and combine our findings with the existing knowledge base. Furthermore, we present our learnings from two teaching cases and reflect our experiences when applying them in class
A Frugal Support Structure for New Software Implementations in SMEs
During software implementations, budgetary and human resource constraints often make it difficult for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to provide and maintain the required support. To overcome these constraints, this study describes a frugal support structure (FSS) to orchestrate available resources and to involve users as suppliers and co-creators of contextualized information. The FSS is conceptualized as a system that enables interaction and collaboration between the actors involved by using extant communication infrastructure wherever possible, systematizing and centralizing knowledge created and ensuring overall resource and time efficiency. Adopting a design science research process, development of the FSS combines a literature review and practical insights. Evaluating the challenges and benefits of FSS, the findings indicate that user involvement is necessary not only for contextualized and accessible support but to make support structures more frugal and sustainable in the long term
Tunable magnetic properties of arrays of Fe(110) nanowires grown on kinetically-grooved W(110) self-organized templates
We report a detailed magnetic study of a new type of self-organized nanowires
disclosed briefly previously [B. Borca et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 90, 142507
(2007)]. The templates, prepared on sapphire wafers in a kinetically-limited
regime, consist of uniaxially-grooved W(110) surfaces, with a lateral period
here tuned to 15nm. Fe deposition leads to the formation of (110) 7 nm-wide
wires located at the bottom of the grooves. The effect of capping layers (Mo,
Pd, Au, Al) and underlayers (Mo, W) on the magnetic anisotropy of the wires was
studied. Significant discrepancies with figures known for thin flat films are
evidenced and discussed in terms of step anisotropy and strain-dependent
surface anisotropy. Demagnetizing coeffcients of cylinders with a triangular
isosceles cross-section have also been calculated, to estimate the contribution
of dipolar anisotropy. Finally, the dependence of magnetic anisotropy with the
interface element was used to tune the blocking temperature of the wires, here
from 50K to 200 K

Enabling the Democratization of Innovation with Smart Toolkits
Toolkits for user innovation and design democratize innovation by offering users a solution space to develop solutions that meet their diverse needs. Advancements in manufacturing and IS have given users space for creativity and innovation and the danger of overloading users with too many design decisions, especially when they also have unknown implicit needs. This design science study presents a toolkit that generates and recommends complete solutions to users. It identifies usersâ implicit needs with a critiquing technique, where users iteratively evaluate recommendations by visually inspecting and selecting matching solutions. It presents artifacts that make up the toolkit and its evaluation by comparing it with a traditional toolkit. The smart toolkit further expands innovation capabilities to society by learning the needs of users and enabling them with completed solutions instead of the traditional toolkit approach, where users follow a slower, manual, learning-by-doing search process through the needs and solution spac
